Races of Whent

Human Races

Tarn - The Tarn are a tall and muscular race with most of the men topping 6'4" and weighing well over 200 lbs. Hair color varies from auburn to jet black and from a soft wave to fairly tight curls. As a rule all the men grow beards upon reaching manhood. The Tarn are a long lived race and may see as much as 300 years, barring misfortune. The Tarn came to the region now known as the Tarnheld well over 7000 years ago, escaping slavery under the Elven Empire. Small enclaves of Tarn may be found throughout the world, but the Tarnheld is the largest concentration by far. The Tarn are the nobility of the Tarnheld kingdoms. Surprisingly tolerant of nearly all races the Jurri and Fal who occupy the lower social strata in the Tarnheld Kingdoms, have interbred with their lords to the point that the peasantry of the Kingdoms are now a distinct race.

Jurri - A red skinned race with long, thick black hair, and predominantly brown eyes, although blue and grey eyed Jurri are occasionally seen. This race is unique to the Jurri plains and is certainly one of the many races who traveled to Whent from some other world in the distant past. A tall race of noble bearing the males commonly reach 6' in height and the woman nearly the same. The Jurri are a very physical race, often "raiding" nearby tribes, but are strangely non-violent as long as "honor" is involved, preferring to "count coup" on those they raid rather than harm them. They compete among themselves in nearly every physical endeavor. Generally a happy people they are organized in familial/tribal groups throughout the plains that bear their name.

Fal - Another race who has lost their origin to time the Fal have long lived in the Forests around the Mountains of the Sun. They are a fairly short race averaging only 5'6" for both males and females. Relatively few true Fal still exist, the majority having been absorbed peacefully into the Tarnheld kingdoms. The remaining tribes are secretive and fiercely protective of their remaining lands.

Ossian - Long ago the Ossian peoples ruled their own empire. Their capital, Altai, is now a long deserted ruin in the Great Salt Marsh and they are now a subject race within A'Satyagraha, The Empire of the Seven Seals. It was from their Ossian subjects that the Ansud developed the idea of the current system of "castes". Ossians are a lithe, brown skinned people, averaging 5'11" for males and 5'5" for women. Both sexes wear their black hair long and often braided. The most driving aspect of a typical Ossian's personality is their religiosity. Religion is truly the main focus of Ossian life.

Ansud - A chisel featured, hawk-nosed, bronze-skinned people who have managed to create the largest Empire on the planet. Like their subjects, the Ansud are highly religious, and the Ansud Pantheon is well known throughout Whent. The Ansud comprise all classes, except the lowest, of members of the society created under A'Satyagraha rule. Although they are more finely featured they otherwise are very similar to the Ossian people, the other major racial group within the empire. Averaging 5'11" for the men and 5'8" for the women, the Ansud are brown or blue eyed, with brown to black hair. They usually wear their hair, which varies from loose waves to tight curls, shoulder-length at the longest.

Aleem - (Princes of the Wind, Arabic + Soumi elements) The Aleem have two sub-divisions, that of the horsemen of the southern plains and the desert dwellers to the north. The northern peoples are generally more talented in the use of magic and much more secretive. There is a large amount of inter-tribal warfare, with the exception that it is taboo for a member of the south tribes to raid one of the tribes from the north. The southern tribes vent their excess energy on the Ansud Empire, the Tami-Ferruk, and the Freehold of Bourda. The northern tribes concentrate on survival and other, more secretive, goals. The Aleem are most typically blond haired and blue eyed and very fair skinned, although brown hair and eyes are also common. 5'10" is common for male Aleem, while 5'5" appears average among the women of the race.

Brie - The race which forms the Principality of Vartillia and the only racial group who, as a unit, worship the "Wandering God". While certainly of human origin, the Brie have odd mannerisms, white to grey hair, green eyes, and an obvious grey pallor that sets them apart where ever they go. The Brie have a well deserved reputation as mariners and users of magic. Nearly all of the Brie have knowledge of at least one spell list and the use of magic is obvious throughout their rocky cities. Brie males average 6'2" with the women coming close at 6' even. They are a thin, in some cases almost emaciated, race, with men rarely reaching 200 lbs.

Bahari - A little known race, the Bahari are found almost exclusively on an island group rumored to be somewhere south of the Kingdom of the Horizon. They are fairly short, averaging 5'6" and 5'2" for the men and women respectively. They are quite attractive and are often described as being "seal-like" and sleek in appearance. They tend to be happy and hardy, but tend toward obesity as they age.

Free-Cities Clannsmen [Kurrick] - A short, stocky, long-lived human race living in the coastal area south of the Great Forest. A quiet tenatious race they also posess night vision similar to that of the non-human races. The clannsmen worship the Old Gods and many honor the ways of the Druids as well. The clannsmen are divided into inland clans and coastal clans, with growing cultural differences between the two groups.

Altaar - Large and strong, the Altaar seem designed for the violent nature of their lives. The Altaar spend the cold months preparing for the constant raiding and warfare of the warm season. Warfare among themselves has been declining of late, but it has brought an increase in their raiding of seashore communities, merchant caravans, and some of the Confederacy groups. The Altaar average about 8'9" and 8'0" for the men and women respectively. Men frequently mass 500 lbs. with massive, rock hard, musculatures. Hair is commonly black, brown, or auburn and covers much of the males' bodies. The women, on the other hand, are almost uniformly models of the human ideal of beauty, albeit standing nearly twice the height of a human female. They, of course, find each other to be the ideal of beauty, and so the race continues. Adventurous slavers and giant raiders occasionally attempt to capture Altaar women for sale or personal use. Rarely do such raids meet with success. (This racial group is similar to the Great Men as detailed in RMC II.)

Zurrtani - This race is found throughout Whent and may be the oldest human inhabitants of the world. The strongest concentration of the Zurrtani is within the tribal lands of the Kellit, Monnit, and Obucc tribes. Zurrtani were the elves' principle slave race, which contributed to the fact that they are now fairly common throughout the world. The typical Zurrtani stands 5'8", (women 5'5"), with blue or green eyes and hair ranging from white-blond to dark brown.

Maya - A race of humans living in near total isolation with a rigid caste system, the Maya are a yellow skinned race with broad round faces and flat noses. Black hair and brown eyes are most common, with the royal caste often having green eyes. The Maya live in mountainous areas and are, as an almost unbroken rule, very fit. Large chests, narrow waists, and thin, but well muscled legs attest to the Mayan habit of running everywhere. 5'7" is average height for both men and women.

Mishi - The Mishi are yellow skinned with thick straight black hair and, most strikingly, black almond shaped eyes. Shorter than the typical human they rarely reach more than 5'9". A driven strong willed race the Mishi have a strong talent with Mentalism and are nearly as talented at seafaring as the Brie. The Mishi are strongly united as a race under the Empire of the Enduring Light. In some ways a brutal, unemotional people they none-the-less produce some of the most sought after art in the areas of painting, sculpture, poetry, dance, and some weapons and armors.

Romm - THE gypsies, they are found throughout the world and the multiverse. As a race they are among the most garrulous, but little is actually known about them. Nobly proportioned the men average about 5'10" with the women about 4" shorter. The typical Romm is olive skinned with black curly hair, and brown eyed.

Benificata -

Xotol - A humanoid pygmy race found exclusively in the jungles of Qirt. They reach an average height of 4'8" with only the most obese topping 100lbs.

Vedill - A human race found in the jungles of Qirt. Very likely an offshoot of the Zurrtani and/or the P'pooula, the Vedill exist as a large number of small semi-nomadic tribes. A truly beautiful people they are tall, commonly reaching 6' to 6'6" in height, with long, tightly curled hair, ranging from light brown to blond, and café-au-lait complexions. Tribal legends and ancient ruins found throughout the northern jungle speak of a more civilized past now lost to this people. A frequent target of slavers the Vedill are frequently found far from their jungle home.

P'pooula - Another human race found in the southern jungles of Qirt. Fiercely warlike the P'pooula fight with anyone discovered having entered their territory. They have for years warred with the Xotol, Vedill, Durri, Lizardmen, the never-ending stream of slavers, and each other. Ch'cha-kurtooul, god of the night and dark places, is their chief deity and the P'pooula enjoy near perfect night vision - but no color vision. Strangely the P'pooula have a fearful/reverential attitude toward the Maya. A dark race the P'pooula have black skin, eyes, and hair. Another striking race the P'pooula average 6'5" in height and are generally perfectly proportioned. Both sexes are equal in P'pooula society with the exception that pregnant women and the few shaman are to be obeyed without question by all. The sick and injured are also avoided during attacks. Blowguns, whips, and short stabbing spears are the most common weapons.

Elven Races

Teleri [Wood Elves] - This race is as outlined in the RMSS except their lifespan is 3,000 to 3,500 years.

Half-Elves - Substantially the same as outlined in the RMSS except their lifespan varied from 500 to 800 years, (depending on the non-Elven parent), and they also gain the Special Abilities and Skills of the race that raises them. By choice most half-elves choose to live alone of among Elven kind. Elsewhere they are common only among the Jurri and in Mishi no Sutaka.

Eressea [High Elves] - This race is as outlined in the RMSS except their lifespan is 3,000 to 5,000 years.

Ruc Eressea [Dark Elves] - This race has the same game characteristics as the High Elves, only their psychology varies.

Allarin [Sea Elves] - This race has the same game characteristics as the Grey Elves in the RMSS except their lifespan is 3,000 to 4,100 years, they possess fully functioning gills with which they may breath in salt of fresh water, and they gain a Co bonus of +4.

Other Races

Durri: Living primarily in the Cho-Durr plain in the far south the Durri are an insectile race having little contact with other races other than the Sessell, (giant spiders), who live in the mountains northeast of Cho-Durr. To a typical human the Durri look like an odd cross between a termite and a praying mantis. The Durri possess six appendages with the lower pair typically used for walking with three digits, the middle pair quite small with seven digits on each hand, and the upper pair disproportionately long with four digits. The middle pair is quite weak and is used when fine control is needed, while the upper pair is used when any real strength is needed. The middle pair is what the Durri base their belief in their racial superiority on. The middle pair of "arms" bears particular mention. Although weak this set of arms is capable of amazing feats of manual dexterity. There is no material more prized than Durri woven spider silk. It is this set of arms upon which much of the quiet Durri belief in their racial superiority rests. They have strength of body as well as manual dexterity unrivalled by any other race, (as far as they are concerned at least). What makes them bearable is that they are so sure of their superiority that they find no need to push it into others faces. After all anyone who does not realize their superiority is obviously mentally deficient and probably a soft shell as well. The fact that the Durri are incapable of vocalization probably helps as well.

The casual observer would find Cho-Durr a fairly barren place with no recognizable evidence of civilization except for the relatively recent

Sessell - A race of intelligent arachnids, the Sessell are very independent and individualistic. As reflected in the game statistics for this race, the females of this race tend to be physically strong and aggressive, while the males tend to mental and physical agility. Females may stand up to 5' tall and 8' long, while the males rarely exceed 4' in height and 5'6" in length. Other than size most humanoid races can not distinguish any difference. All Sessell are heavily furred, most commonly in brown with black markings. While the females tend to be pure black underneath, this method of determining sex has become increasingly unreliable as the practice of dying one's hair is becoming more prominent among the Sessell.

Grataar - A frog-like race …..

Lizardmen -

Ferruk - The Bearmen of the northern Great Wood. Seeming a composite creature the Ferruk have a humanoid body and head, hands, and feet similar to that of a bear. The Ferruk are 6'6" to 9' in height with brown to auburn hair over much, if not all, of their body. While they are an intelligent race it is their strength and ferocity in battle which they are known for.

Toth - A race of giant four-armed humanoids, the Toth are at most a rumor to most other inhabitants of Whent. The Toth average about 9' in height with straight grey hair and grey eyes. One of the truly ancient races, and a native of Whent, there is little one of the Toth elders can not accomplish. As a race the Toth have vowed to never effect other beings' karma. To this end the Toth are unequalled in the art of shapechanging and never interact with another race except while in a "common" form. Also to this end the Toth will usually never act outside of watching and some very occasional advise. Only where there is a probability of great harm to Whent itself will they take direct action. While the Toth worship no god, they give the "Wandering God" a place of great honor, and respect most other gods. Many of the elder Toth seem to speak of the "Wandering God" almost as an honored friend or confidant, rather than an elusive deific force.
